See things that are not there
September 1 - 25, 2016

00chan6.jpg

From the earliest stage in my development, stability and peace were the foundation in building my work, and the passage from the East to West provided the structure. After living in Canada for nearly 50 years, the living environment and daily life gradually increased in their presence. I am discovering small things around me. These little elements tell far more complex stories than I can about my understanding of my life. With this exhibition I hope it is a beginning of a journey that allows me to “see things that are not there”.

Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing
November 1 - December 2, 2012

Love Is a Many-Slendored Thing, 2012, silk thread, bamboo, wood, oil and acrylic paint, 38 X 41 X 4 1/4 in.

The exhibition title, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, became apparent when I was working on this current body of work. It is the name of a Hollywood movie, filmed in 1955, which made location shots in Hong Kong where I was a high school student. It planted the seed of questioning the integration of the east and the west, which has become a significant theme in my work. Since I began using threads more than forty years ago, I have always considered this material performing the role of the East. As I was developing the pieces for this exhibition, I am happy to say am that I still in love with threads as a means of my personal expression, hence the title for the whole exhibition… Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing indeed!

To Please the Eye: recent constructions
October 4 - 28, 2007

Toronto Life
October 2007 listing

Chan’s celebrated minimalist sculptures comprise humble materials, including toothpicks, cloth, cinnamon sticks and plastic bags. His new body of work is inspired by the shape and beauty of ethnic artifacts. Buddhism, as always, seems a predominant influence. Indeed, Chan touts his art practice as a means by which to make the mundane, even the supposedly dead and artificial, transcendent; in his hands, a stick from a forsythia plant emerging from a bottle, with a blob of oil paint attached, becomes a precious symbol of hope.
